Army Sgt. Ralph Wade of the WWII 319th Glider Artillery Battalion, 82nd Airborne, was killed in action on D-Day near St. Mere Eglise, France, at 30 years of age. He piloted a glider in a 40 glider night assault carrying men and a 75 mm howitzer. The 319th suffered 40% losses to gliders because of enemy fire and collisions on the night of 6 June 1944. Raised on Hanna Lane in Londonderry, he was a teacher by trade.
