On 10 March 2015, MOJO 69, a UH-60M Blackhawk helicopter carrying four Soldiers from the 1-244 Assault Helicopter Battalion, Louisiana Army National Guard, and seven Marine Raiders from 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, crashed in dense fog during a routine training mission over the Santa Rosa Sound, killing all eleven aboard. First responders from Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field, the U.S. Coast Guard, and local and county fire, police, and EMS units answered the scene, but dense fog, rain, and poor water conditions slowed recovery operations for the first three days. The crash and joint recovery effort drew national attention and lasted 10 days, as 35 agencies and more than 400 personnel worked to recover each of the crew members. Strong community support aided family members, first responders, recovery teams, and the wider community. The dead are remembered along with all who have worn the cloth of the Nation and made the ultimate sacrifice, having come from small towns and large cities, served in training and combat, placed their Nation first, defended liberty to their last breath, and provided the freedom and security Americans enjoy.
