The original Immaculate Conception church was built in 1859 near Chenal Cemetery and was enlarged three times to a final size of 35 feet wide by 100 feet deep. Immaculate Conception Parish grew out of a mission parish of St. Francis Church Parish on the Mississippi River about 8 miles upstream from its intersection with Bayou Chenal. All church services were held here until 1927, when the current church was built at Lakeland under Reverend Savare. After that, the Chenal church building remained in place and was used mainly for funeral services for parishioners buried at Chenal Cemetery. Reverend Neubig had the deteriorated building removed in 1953.
