Arts & Culture
Founded in 1911 as the Delgado Museum of Art through a gift from sugar broker and collector Isaac Delgado, the New Orleans Museum of Art is the city’s oldest fine arts museum and one of its leading cultural institutions. In City Park, it grew through later additions and a major 1993 renovation into a museum with more than 40,000 objects spanning 5,000 years. Especially strong in European and American painting, it also holds major collections in photography and many world art traditions. Its sculpture garden, exhibitions, educational programs, and survival of Hurricane Katrina with most of its permanent collection spared underscore its lasting civic importance.
