Carbon County Jail in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, was built in 1869–1870 by Harry Bowman under architect Edward Haviland as a fortress-like stone jail with thick walls, arched front windows, and a guard turret above the entrance. It served as an active jail well into the late 20th century, with its basement used for solitary confinement until 1980. The jail is especially tied to the Molly Maguires trials of 1875–1876, when suspected members were held there awaiting trial and later hanged. Its best-known story centers on cell 17 and a handprint linked by legend to Alexander Campbell. After closing in 1995, it was preserved and became the Old Jail Museum.
