Ouray Peak rises to 12,963 feet in Colorado’s Sawatch Mountains, within the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness of San Isabel National Forest. Located about 6 miles south of Independence Pass, it is part of the state’s high alpine terrain and one of Colorado’s major mountain ranges. Its significance lies in its remote wilderness setting, where the peak is experienced as a backcountry summit in a protected landscape rather than as a developed tourist destination.
