In Wharton, Texas, a non-profit museum explores everyday and experimental technology of the twentieth century in the former Wharton County Jail, built in 1888. Opened in July 2005, it presents devices that shaped modern life, including radios, phonographs, televisions, telephones, typewriters, cameras, computers, home appliances, farm equipment, and other electronics. While strongest in smaller artifacts, the collection also includes larger machinery and vehicles, tracing technology from the home to the workshop and beyond. Many objects still work, and some are demonstrated or used hands-on, especially arcade games. Unusual exhibits include experimental aircraft such as an ornithopter and a Rutan VariEze.
