Portal of the Folded Wings Shrine to Aviation, on the North Hollywood-Burbank line in California, began as the monumental entrance rotunda to Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery, founded in 1923. Designed by Kenneth A. MacDonald Jr. and dedicated in 1925, the seventy-two-foot Spanish Colonial Revival structure later became a shrine to early aviation, formally dedicated in 1953 after years of effort by James Gillette. It honors pioneers of flight through cenotaphs and burials, including Amelia Earhart, Billy Mitchell, Charles Edward Taylor, Matilde Moisant, and Augustus Roy Knabenshue. Damaged by a 1969 plane crash and the 1994 Northridge earthquake, it was restored, rededicated in 1996, and listed on the National Register in 1998.
