Gwin Dudley Home Site, also known as Twin Chimneys, preserves the remains of a house built about 1795 at Smith Mountain Lake in Wirtz, Virginia. Now as much an archaeological site as a building site, it is marked by two stone chimneys standing 31 feet, 8 inches apart, indicating the length of the lost dwelling. Although the house was destroyed by fire in the early 20th century, a stone tablet with the initials GD and the date 1795 remains set into the south chimney. These surviving fragments preserve a tangible link to a late-18th-century home.
