Trinchera Cave Archeological District in southern Colorado preserves one of southeastern Colorado’s important rock-shelter sites, with evidence of human use from the Archaic period through 1749. Its sheltered setting made it habitable over many centuries, and archaeological remains show repeated occupation by late Archaic groups, Sopris phase peoples, the Apishapa culture complex, and later Apache and Comanche groups. Artifacts include projectile points, pottery tied to Pueblo communities, and remains reflecting Panhandle or Antelope Creek influences, showing exchange between the Plains and the Southwest. The site is especially notable for preserving rare perishable objects and for revealing long cultural continuity and changing lifeways.
