Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site in St. Martinville, Louisiana preserves the history and culture of the Bayou Teche region through both literary memory and historic buildings. Established in 1934 as Louisiana’s oldest state park site, it reflects the lasting influence of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s 1847 poem Evangeline, whose Acadian lovers became part of local folklore. The site also interprets the area’s deeper Acadian and Creole heritage through Maison Olivier, an early 19th-century Raised Creole Cottage, an Acadian cabin, and a reproduction farmstead. Together, these features connect the poem’s legendary setting to the lived realities of settlement, work, and family life in south Louisiana.
