Near this intersection stood Kennedy's Store, one of the first buildings and an early post office of Tinkling. The original store building is associated with William F. Kennedy, who later purchased land from L.W. Bridgforth, platted and sold the first lots, and helped form the incorporated Town of Kenbridge on March 14, 1908. The land had earlier belonged to William Brown, who operated a grocery store at this crossroads, known as Brown's Crossroads, before, during, and after the Civil War. William Brown's brother Jesse Brown operated a general store three-quarters of a mile north on the old Cox Road-Rt. 40 at McFarlands, where the area post office, lower court, and voting place for the Brown's Store Magisterial District were located.
