Thomas Chittenden was born in this town on January 6, 1730. He served as a colonel in the French and Indian Wars from 1756 to 1760, was a member of the Connecticut General Assembly from 1765 to 1772, and was the first governor of Vermont from 1778 to 1789 and again from 1790 to 1797. He died in Chittenden County, Vermont, on August 25, 1797.
