Sandy Hook Light

Transportation
Sandy Hook Light, built by Isaac Conro on June 11, 1764, was created to guide mariners entering the southern approach to New York Harbor and is recognized as the oldest working lighthouse in the United States. Originally called New York Lighthouse, it was funded by a lottery and a tax on ships entering the Port of New York. Its site has shifted from near the tip of Sandy Hook to about one and a half miles inland because of shoreline change. It survived the Revolutionary War, later passed into federal control, and was honored for its role in commerce and transportation before being restored in 2000.
