Goethe State Forest is a protected forest in Florida near the Gulf Coast, northwest of Dunnellon, extending across Alachua and Levy counties. Created in 1992, it was named for James Tillinghast Goethe, who sold most of his land to the state for conservation. The forest is closely linked with equestrian recreation, with four trailheads along County Road 337 for riders and carts. It also supports red-cockaded woodpeckers, a rare species associated with longleaf pine habitat. Its main tract is co-managed as the Goethe Wildlife Management Area, and the forest has expanded over time through additions including the Watermelon Pond tracts and other land acquisitions.
