Founded in 1937 by businessman, investor, and archaeologist William Shirley Fulton, the Amerind Foundation near Dragoon, Arizona, became both a museum and a research center devoted to preserving and interpreting Native American cultures and histories. Set in Texas Canyon, it developed around archaeological and ethnological work on the property and later drew on Charles C. Di Peso’s excavations at Casas Grandes and other sites. Its collections span artifacts and ethnographic materials from Alaska to South America, supported by a major research library and art gallery. The 1,900-acre campus also includes a nature preserve, reflecting the foundation’s enduring union of scholarship, collections, and landscape.
