Battle of Great Bridge
Military
4
Early in November 1775, the British erected a fort at Great Bridge. On December 9, 1775, the first decisive land battle of the American Revolution in the south was fought there. Virginia forces under Col. William Woodford joined the militia of South Norfolk County under Col. John Wilson and that of adjoining counties and defeated the British. The fort fell, resulting in the evacuation of Norfolk by Lord Dunmore.
