On June 25, 1814, the clerk of the County Court arranged for county and state records that had recently been moved from Annapolis to be taken to a safe place after alarm that the British were approaching Upper Marlboro. The records were stored in the house now known as Mount Lubentia, then owned by Dennis Magruder, north of town on the old road to Bladensburg and Georgetown, D.C. Within two months, a British invasion force marched through Upper Marlboro on the way to Washington, then turned west and north toward Bladensburg, where a battle was fought on August 24. A few days later, returning by a different route, the British marched past this area, apparently unaware that the important records were stored at Mount Lubentia. Probable fragments of those records were found by the present owners during the restoration of Mount Lubentia in the late 1990s.
