Edinburg Mill in Edinburg, Virginia, on Stony Creek, served local industry for more than a century as a grist mill in a three-story wood-framed building over a limestone basement. Built in 1848 by the Grandstaff family to replace an 1813 complex that also included a sawmill and carding business, it reflected the creekside site’s importance to early local production. The mill remained in operation until 1978 and retains practical mill design along with older construction methods, including 18th-century techniques. During the Civil War, Union troops under Philip Sheridan set it afire, but local women persuaded them to save the flour, and the blaze was extinguished before the building was destroyed.
