The Whitecoff family opened Woodbridge Airport on this site in 1961 as a general aviation field, initially building it as a dirt strip like many small, family-operated airports of the time. As air traffic increased, improvements added buildings, and by 1966 a paved runway was in operation, with a parallel taxiway eventually added. The runway was 2200 feet long and had a distinctive dip at its south end. Training new pilots was a major function, supported by dedicated on-site instructors and aircraft. Charles Benn, who had previously developed the Washington-Virginia Airport near Bailey's Crossroads, purchased the airfield in 1970 and owned it until 1986. The airport closed in 1987 because of encroaching suburban development, a fate shared by similar facilities during the period, and many pilots relocated to airports in Manassas and Leesburg.
