The parish was established in 1706. Rev. Nathaniel Osborn, missionary of the S.P.G., arrived in 1715. In 1725, after the parish had been devastated by Yemassee Indians, an act of the General Assembly provided for a Chapel of Ease here to be used as a parish church until one should be built. John Wesley preached here on April 24th, 1737. In 1753, the vestry ordered a brick building to replace the wooden chapel. The building was burnt between 1796 and 1806 and has since been known as “The Burnt Church.”
