Prior to the capture of Columbia by Gen. William T. Sherman, Federal artillery shelled the city on February 16, 1865, from batteries on a hill and in the road at the end of the Congaree River bridge. Shots were fired at the Arsenal, the site of the Governor's Mansion, and the State House, which still bears scars of the bombardment.
