On Nov. 28, 1863, after escaping from Ohio Penitentiary and taking a train to Cincinnati, CSA Gen. John Hunt Morgan and Capt. Thomas Hines crossed the Ohio River to Ludlow. Sympathetic Boone County residents, as well as Big Bone Baptist Church, gave them food, shelter, and supplies. They rode into Gallatin County the following night. Their route ran from north to south through Boone County on Nov. 28 and 29, 1863, with stops along the way.
