The U.S. Second Division, Army of the Ohio, included the 4th Brigade under Brig. Gen. Lovell H. Rousseau, the 5th Brigade under Col. Edward H. Kirk of the 34th Illinois, the 6th Brigade under Col. Wm. H. Gibson of the 49th Ohio, and Battery H, 5th U.S. Artillery under Capt. Wm. R. Terrill. The 4th and 5th Brigades arrived on the field about 8 o'clock Monday morning, April 7, 1862, and formed in the camp of the 3d Iowa, with the 4th Brigade in the front line and the 5th in reserve, then soon advanced to Duncan Field where the 4th Brigade became engaged. About noon the division moved forward to the vicinity of McClernand's Headquarters, where the 5th Brigade relieved the 4th and took position in the front line, while the 6th Brigade arrived on the field and took position on the left of the 5th; the division fought beyond Water Oaks Pond until the enemy retired, then bivouacked near the camp of the 57th Ohio. The division had 7552 officers and men present for duty and suffered losses of 88 killed, 823 wounded, and 7 missing, for a total of 918.
