The U.S. Army expedition led by Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark traveled up the Missouri River and passed through this area on July 9, 1804. That evening William Clark wrote that they passed the mouth of a creek on the left side, called Monter's Creek and known today as Mosquito Creek, and that about two miles above were some cabins where their bowman and several Frenchmen had camped two years earlier. Two miles beyond the cabins, the Corps reached the Wolf River, which Clark recorded as about 60 yards wide and abounding with beaver. On the return trip on September 11, 1806, Clark wrote that Wolf River scarcely ran at all and that the party came only 40 miles that day because the river was rapid and in many places crowded with snags; he also observed much deer sign on the shores. During the return journey through this area in 1806, Sargeant Floyd commented in his journal that the men stopped to dine on paw paws, a berry that grows in the area.
