Trinity Church, an Episcopal parish on Copley Square in Boston’s Back Bay, was founded in 1733 and remains an important religious and civic institution. After its Summer Street church was destroyed in the Great Boston Fire of 1872, the present granite building was erected between 1872 and 1877 under Phillips Brooks and designed by Henry Hobson Richardson. Its central tower, modified Greek-cross plan, and Romanesque design established Richardson’s national reputation and helped define Richardsonian Romanesque. The church is also notable for its art, including murals by John La Farge, stained glass, and sculpture, as well as its distinguished musical life and exceptional standing in American architectural history.
