Located one mile south, Piney Flats Village became an officially named community when railroad construction began there in 1854 and Reverend Andrew Shell established its first post office. In 1889 John Bunyan Wolfe founded Wolfe Bros. & Co., a manufacturer of household and church furniture. As the village grew, it developed its own power and telephone systems, and examples of 19th century architecture remain throughout the village. The Piney Flats Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on November 15, 2011.
