Whaleback Light stands on a rocky offshore ledge at the mouth of the Piscataqua River in Kittery, Maine, marking the entrance to a busy and hazardous stretch of coast. Established in 1830, the station was upgraded in 1855 and 1863 before storm damage led to construction of the present granite tower in 1872; the earlier lighthouse was removed in 1880. Unusually, the tower included living quarters and storage because of its exposed isolation. Staffed until 1963, it later gained National Register recognition, passed to lighthouse preservation groups in 2008, and in 2022 regained a more traditional-style beacon after public opposition to a modern LED light.
