Established in 1946, the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory is solely dedicated to supporting the U.S. Navy's submarine and aircraft carrier fleet through the development of advanced nuclear propulsion technologies and the training of sailors to safely operate them. Founded by Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program has overall responsibility for the research, development, testing, construction, training, and cradle-to-grave ownership of the Navy's nuclear propulsion systems. Often called the "Father of the Nuclear Navy," Rickover served for more than 63 years under 13 different U.S. Presidents, and his emphasis on safety, critical thinking, and personal responsibility is largely credited as the foundation for the U.S. Navy's continuing record of maritime dominance and zero radiation accidents.
