A historic rock carving on the Colorado River in southern Utah preserves a brief inscription, “Denis Julian / MAIZ / 1836,” long associated with the French-American trapper Denis Julien. Julien traveled through the region in the late 1830s or early 1840s and is regarded as one of the first Europeans to enter this area. The carving has become important evidence of early non-Indigenous travel through canyon country, though its authenticity has been questioned because the surname appears as “Julian” instead of “Julien,” with some arguing the apparent “a” may be a script “e.” It is also one of at least eight inscriptions linked to Julien in Utah between 1831 and 1844.
