Fleming County was Kentucky's twenty-sixth county, formed from Mason County in 1798. It was named for John Fleming, a Revolutionary War officer who came in 1776 to mark and improve land and built Fleming's Station, among the county's earliest settlements. Fellow pioneers included John Finley, Michael Cassidy, and his half-brother George Stockton. Stockton owned land, laid out, and named Flemingsburg in 1796.
