Avery Island, Louisiana, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior in September 2018. It is the ancestral home of the inter-related Marsh, Avery, and McIlhenny families; the birthplace of world-famous Tabasco Brand Pepper Sauce; and the location of Jungle Gardens, the Bird City Wildfowl Refuge, an early rock salt mine, and over fifty state-registered archaeological sites.
