Established in 1918 as an artillery range and named for Major General Henry Knox, who organized artillery during the Revolutionary War, Camp Knox began mechanized cavalry training in 1931, was redesignated Fort Knox in January 1932, and became the site of the Armored Force in 1940. Millions trained here in cavalry and armor and served in World War II, the Cold War, Korea, and Vietnam.
