Henry McNeal Turner, born in 1834 in Newberry, South Carolina, and raised in Abbeville, South Carolina, was a missionary pioneer to South Africa, a liberation theologian, a social and political activist, the first Black United States military chaplain, and the consecrated twelfth bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1880.
