At Bull Run Bridge, the first Civil War battle for the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery, the regiment lost one soldier killed, six wounded, and 53 missing on the morning of August 27th, 1862. Among the wounded was Adam Worth, a German-born immigrant who had enlisted in the army at 17; after being evacuated to the rear, he learned he had been falsely listed as killed, deserted from the hospital, returned to Europe, and began a successful criminal career. George Taylor, born in New Jersey, had served in the U.S. Navy, resigned, joined the pre-war army, became colonel of the 3rd New Jersey Infantry, and later took command of the 1st New Jersey Brigade. When the 1st New Jersey entered the battle on August 27th, Taylor went in with his men, was struck in the leg by an artillery shell fragment, and died four days later in an army hospital.
