Dogtooth Bend Mounds and Village Site stands on the western shore of Lake Milligan in southern Illinois and preserves two mounds with a village area extending northwest from them. Middle Mississippian peoples inhabited the village from about 900 to 1600 A.D. The settlement is thought to have functioned as both a trade hub and a social center for people on the surrounding farmland, linking it to the wider regional network of Mississippian settlement and exchange. Formal archaeological study began in 1950 under Irvin Peithman of Southern Illinois University, and the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 for its importance as evidence of long-term Indigenous settlement in Illinois.
