On July 1, 1862, Union cavalry under Col. Philip H. Sheridan was attacked by a larger force under Confederate General James Chalmers. During the engagement, Sheridan divided his command and launched an attack in front, rear, and left flanks, driving Chalmers from the field. As a result, Sheridan was promoted to Brigadier General.
