The Chandelier Tree in Leggett, California, is an ancient coast redwood about 276 feet tall, roughly 16 feet in diameter, and estimated to be about 2,400 years old. It is famous for the drive-through tunnel cut through its base in the late 1930s to attract motorists on the Redwood Highway. Its name comes from huge limbs beginning about 100 feet above the ground and spreading in a chandelier-like form. The grove, on land bought by Charles and Hazel Underwood in 1921, later added cabins and other amenities and continues as Drive-Thru Tree Park, a popular roadside stop and a recognizable piece of Americana.
