First Baptist Church was organized on July 13, 1844, at the home of J. B. Hurt east of Mayfield with 14 members. Its constituting council was composed of Elders Milton Wyman, Henry Richardson, Dennis Ray, Willis White, and Hardeman Puryear. The first building was erected in 1858 and the second in 1867, both on East Broadway. A third structure was built in 1901, and the present church in 1929; the last two occupied this site.
