Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve is a 298-acre protected area on Virginia’s Eastern Shore along the Chesapeake Bay, known for a line of dunes rising about 50 feet, unusually high for this low coastal region. Its beach, dune, and maritime forest communities provide habitat for migratory songbirds, the northeastern beach tiger beetle, and several regionally rare plants, including Engelmann's umbrella-sedge, dwarf burhead, and southern bladderwort. The preserve’s name comes from Thomas Savage, who arrived in Virginia in 1608 and later received 9,000 acres on the Eastern Shore from Debedeavon of the Accomac people. It is publicly owned, maintained for conservation, and open to visitors.
