Robert Mitchell bought lot 19 of the original town plat in 1797 and built a dwelling about 1797-1800. In the 1850's Henry Maxwell, an area attorney, reportedly housed jurors from the courthouse in an upstairs room. In 1900 Peter Miller bought the Eureka House, enlarged it to its present size, and added the overhanging porch. J.R. Russell added the first bathtub with running water in 1910 as Hotel Russell. Then about 1950 H. Gresham, Jr., began a grocery and taxi cab service. In 1997 a group of preservationists began the last restoration as a hotel, which was completed in 2000 as the historic Eureka Inn.
