The Moultrie Packing Company meat-packing facility opened in 1914, and Swift & Company took over operations in 1917 and ran the plant until 1970, when it built a new plant and transferred operations there. The original plant was then operated by Swift Independent Packing Company from 1970 to 1973, Swift Fresh Meat Company from 1973 to 1988, Sunnyland from 1988 to 1989, and Premium Pork Incorporated from 1989 to 1993. In 1993, the plant was sold to Smithfield Pork Company and was closed shortly thereafter. Demolition began in 1996, the stockyard buildings were razed in 2007, and the engine room, boiler house, and smokestack were demolished in 2011. The packing plant represented the convergence of modern construction techniques with industrial-scale steam and refrigeration technology, and it was economically and socially embedded in the Moultrie community from 1914 until 2001, when most of the complex was razed.
