On April 22, 2008, at 7:36 in the morning, Marine Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter and Corporal Jonathan Yale were manning a guard post at the entrance to Joint Security Station Nassar in Ramadi, Iraq, when a truck carrying 2000 pounds of high explosives raced through concrete Jersey barriers in an attempt to breach the security corridor and kill the 33 Marines and 20 Iraqi police housed in the compound. The two Marines stood their ground and opened fire on the suicide bomber, killing him instantly, but the truck continued forward briefly and exploded, devastating the surrounding area, killing Haerter and Yale, and injuring 2 other Marines as well as numerous Iraqi police and citizens, while ultimately saving the lives of the others in the compound. For his extraordinary heroism that day, Haerter was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. Jordan Christian Haerter, a native of Sag Harbor, was 19 years old when he died. On May 7, 2008, the State of New York Senate and Assembly enacted recognition of the ultimate sacrifice he paid in serving his country and honored all the veterans of Sag Harbor, North Haven, and Noyac who had served the nation.
