Since 1914, more than a million people have attended outdoor performances at the Open Air Theatre, where world-class artists in music, theatre, and dance have shared the stage with nature. Beginning with a Dance Spectacular in 1914, productions have included ballet, modern and folk dance, musical comedy, symphony orchestra, popular vocal artists, and fountain shows. Musical theatre has been a mainstay since 1916, when the Savoy Company became the first theatrical company to perform there. Since 1923, Savoy has presented a Gilbert and Sullivan production every year except in 1927 and during World War II. Another annual tradition began in 1932 with The Brandywiners, whose musicals have totaled 500 performances in the theatre. From 1960 to 1976, the American Legion presented 90 performances of grand historical pageants, and the Lyceum Players staged 37 performances of Shakespeare's plays. Carmen, Aida, and other grand opera productions have also been featured.
