Dixon Mills preserves the history of the former Joseph Dixon Crucible Company site in Jersey City, New Jersey. Its story began in 1840, when Joseph Dixon moved his crucible factory from Salem, Massachusetts, to what is now the Van Vorst Park area of historic downtown Jersey City. The works later produced not only crucibles but also pencils, crayons, stove polish, and lubricants, reflecting the site’s broader industrial role. In the mid-1980s, the factory complex was converted into residences while preserving the old buildings and the bridges connecting them, leaving the site as a reminder of Jersey City’s manufacturing past.
