Barkcamp State Park near Belmont in eastern Ohio is a one-thousand-five-acre public recreation area centered on the one-hundred-seventeen-acre Belmont Lake. Its name reflects Barkcamp Creek and the area's logging past, when bark was stripped from logs at a camp here before the timber went to a mill. Ohio began assembling the land in 1955 through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, first developing it as a fishing and game reserve. After a dam was completed in 1963, the altered water flow helped create the present lake setting. Today the park supports camping, equestrian use, hiking, boating, swimming, and other outdoor recreation.
