Lightwood Knot Springs, situated about two miles north, was a popular summer resort during the first half of the nineteenth century and later became a Confederate training camp for recruits. A few miles east, Rice Creek Springs was another early summer resort and the site of Richland Polytechnic Institute from 1830 to 1845.
