The school was built in 1878 at Dutch Corners and moved to its present site in the late 1890s. Charlie Poy, who had cooked for railroad crews from his kitchen tent, opened Newman’s first restaurant. Other restaurants followed, including Las Flores Cafe, a Mexican restaurant that closed in 2015.
