Eddy Arboretum, at the Institute of Forest Genetics in the Sierra Nevada near Placerville, is both a public garden and a research landscape within the United States Forest Service’s Pacific Southwest Research Station. Established with its first plantings in 1926, it was created to support forest genetics by gathering as many pine species and varieties as possible while carefully documenting seed sources and often the location of parent trees. Its collection includes 78 pine species, 24 fir species, and many other conifers, with unusual value in the detailed records that connect the living collection to long-term forestry, breeding, and conservation research.
