The men of Confederate Gen. William H. C. Whiting’s division began their portion of the decisive charge in these fields. The 11th Mississippi was in the foreground around Whiting. Gen. John B. Hood exhorted the 4th Texas in the middle distance, in the Parsons farm field. Five more Confederate brigades under Gen. James Longstreet extended the line beyond Hood.
